Chelsea head into a key run of winter fixtures with renewed urgency around squad depth, and the latest injury update paints a mixed picture for manager Enzo Maresca. While Moises Caicedo is available in Europe due to his suspension not carrying across competitions, several team mates face uncertain timetables. With Chelsea looking to maintain momentum in Maresca’s second season, every fitness development matters.
Chelsea’s 3-0 win against Bournemouth brought another unwanted twist when Liam Delap was forced off early. The forward collided with Marcos Senesi and landed awkwardly on his shoulder, prompting immediate medical attention before he headed straight down the tunnel.
Maresca cut a frustrated figure post match as he explained the latest blow.“We don’t know for how long, but it looks quite bad, his shoulder. He has been unlucky. He was out for two months already. Now he has to be out again. Also we are a bit unlucky because we need that kind of a No9. We tried today with Marc [Guiu]. But, yes, it’s an injury.”
Chelsea’s need for a natural focal point has been a theme of Maresca’s tenure, and Delap’s departure only increases the pressure on younger alternatives.Potential return date, Unknown

Romeo Lavia’s Chelsea career has become a story of recurring setbacks. Since his £53 million arrival from Southampton, the midfielder has made only 29 appearances, and another injury has halted his rhythm. He picked up his latest problem in the Champions League match away to Qarabag on November 5, prompting questions about his availability.
Maresca did little to ease concerns when speaking before the trip to Bournemouth.“It’s a muscle problem,” he said. “We don’t know yet when he can be back.”Asked whether the issue is short term or long term, the manager added, “We don’t know.”
With Chelsea’s midfield rotation already stretched, Lavia’s continued absence complicates Maresca’s plans in both domestic and European competition.Potential return date, Unknown
Dario Essugo’s progress looked encouraging after early steps back into training following his thigh injury and operation sustained with Portugal Under 21s in September. That optimism has paused, however, after a small setback saw coaches urge caution.
“For sure, he [Essugo] is not available for the next three games,” Maresca confirmed. “I don’t think [it is serious]. We need to check him, as it happened yesterday. Unfortunately it was just yesterday so I don’t know.”
Initially seen as an option to support the midfield during Caicedo’s suspension, Essugo will now focus on steady rehabilitation.Potential return date, Tuesday December 16 vs Cardiff (A)
Levi Colwill’s season long absence remains one of the club’s most significant injury stories. The defender suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury shortly after returning from the Club World Cup, requiring surgery and ruling him out for the majority of the campaign.
Reports in November suggested meaningful progress, with the centre back no longer on crutches and experiencing no setbacks during rehab. A late season return has not been ruled out, although the timeline remains broad.Potential return date, Spring or summer 2026
