Lazio defender Mario Gila has reportedly attracted a new suitor in the shape of Chelsea, who join Napoli, Inter Milan and several other clubs in the race.
The 26-year-old signed for the Italian capital side in 2022 and slowly but surely established himself as one of the finest centre-backs in Serie A. However, the Spaniard’s contract will expire in June 2027, leaving his future up in the air.
Moreover, his former club, Real Madrid, have a 50% sell-on clause, so Lazio will only collect half of the transfer fee. Therefore, it has been reported that Claudio Lotito has set his asking price at €30 million, and he wouldn’t mind keeping the defender in Rome until his contract expires next year. However, the player could push for an exit amid growing interest in his services.
In recent days, Napoli have emerged as the frontrunners in the race for Gila, especially after choosing Massimiliano Allegri as their next head coach. The Livorno native was already planning to bring the Barcelona native to AC Milan before his sacking at the end of the season.
According to La Repubblica (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Napoli are facing stern competition from Italy and abroad, especially with Chelsea joining the fray. The newspaper also mentions interest from Juventus, Inter Milan, and Atletico Madrid, in addition to Real Madrid, who would benefit from a 50% discount thanks to their sell-on fee.
The source adds that Lotito had promised Gennaro Gattuso to keep Gila at Formello, barring any irresistible offers (€30 million or beyond), but it remains to be seen if the controversial Lazio patron will keep his word.
