Milan decided to keep Mike Maignan and instead sell Theo Hernandez this summer even though they both had just a year on their contract. The Rossoneri rejected an offer from Chelsea in July, and then took him off the market, Calciomercato reports.

The goalkeeper would have liked to go to London but didn’t dig his heels in to do so. Massimiliano Allegri entrusted him with a prominent role within the group, and he appreciated the recognition.

Despite the turn of events in recent months, the renewal talks between Maignan and Milan haven’t restarted. There was a significant gap between the team’s proposal and the request before the summer. It remains to be determined whether the brass will attempt again to come to terms to avoid a Bosman exit, or if they have already come to grips with it.

If it were to happen, the shot-stopper would aim to join a top European side, unlike his former teammate. Chelsea didn’t add a new option at the position in the last window and remains a very likely landing spot for the future. They had reached an agreement on his personal terms before the Rossoneri elected to keep him and halt the negotiations.

It’d be an odd call if they didn’t have any chance to concur to at least a short-term renewal. While his price tag isn’t massive due to his age, they’d still miss out on a decent income if he left for free. His sale would have fetched a sum comparable to Theo Hernandez’s one, and considering how much money they racked up from other exits, it wouldn’t have been too tough to find a worthy replacement.
