Chelsea retain League Cup after defeating Manchester United in Bristol | OneFootball

Chelsea have retained the Subway Women’s League Cup after defeating Manchester United 2-0 in this season’s final at Ashton Gate in Bristol this afternoon.

Lauren James and Aggie Beever-Jones got the goals as The Blues sealed their first piece of silverware of the season.

It was Manchester United who recorded the first shot of the game. Elisabeth Terland took aim from range but Hannah Hampton was equal to it.

The Red Devils had started brightly but their good work was undone in the 19th minute when Dominique Janssen produced an error and James nipped in to score the opener for Chelsea.

Maya Le Tissier was then close to deflecting a clearance into her own net before Terland drilled a shot wide at the other end. The forward was a real threat to the Chelsea goal and she soon tested Hampton again with a thumping strike.

Just before the break, Alyssa Thompson advanced towards goal but Le Tissier did well to make a crucial tackle.

Chelsea went close to making it 2-0 on the hour. Julia Zigiotti Olme blocked Beever-Jones’ shot before James fired wide from the rebound. The former Manchester United player then struck a shot straight at Phallon Tullis-Joyce before Beever-Jones netted Chelsea’s second goal after getting on the end of Johanna Rytting Kaneryd’s cross.

Both sides had chances to add to the scoreline late on but James was denied by Tullis-Joyce and Hampton pulled off an excellent save from a Melvine Malard effort. In the end, the game ended 2-0 as Chelsea’s domestic cup dominance against Manchester United continued.

Chelsea have become Subway Women’s League Cup winners for the fourth time in their history.
