Chelsea vs Palmeiras: Joao Pedro Awaits Debut Amid Injury Woes Ahead of CWC Quarter-Final

As Chelsea prepare to face Palmeiras in the Club World Cup quarter-finals, the anticipation surrounding Joao Pedro’s potential debut is matched only by growing concerns over injuries and suspensions. With the eyes of the footballing world on Lincoln Financial Field, Enzo Maresca is grappling with a reshuffled deck.

New Faces and Familiar Dilemmas

Joao Pedro’s £60m move from Brighton is timely, at least from a registration perspective. The Brazilian has been included in Chelsea’s squad, training with his new teammates midweek. Though a debut is likely, it may come from the bench, with Liam Delap expected to lead the line again. Delap, a summer addition himself, is trusted to provide the focal point, despite Nicolas Jackson returning from a two-match suspension following his red card against Flamengo — Chelsea’s only defeat in the competition so far.

Midfield Recalibration Without Caicedo

Moises Caicedo’s absence — due to suspension after a second yellow against Benfica — forces a tactical rethink. Romeo Lavia’s fitness test looms large, and should he miss out, Enzo Fernandez might be asked to anchor the midfield in a deeper role next to Reece James.

Maresca’s choices in this area will be key to dictating the tempo against a Palmeiras side known for their vertical transitions and midfield discipline. Chelsea must compensate not only for Caicedo’s ball-winning presence but also his ability to control the rhythm.

Defensive Uncertainty Casts Long Shadow

At the back, injuries continue to bite. Benoit Badiashile, who limped off against Benfica and was later seen on crutches, is a significant doubt. In his likely absence, Trevoh Chalobah is expected to step in alongside Levi Colwill, while Marc Cucurella retains his place at left-back.

It’s a back four that promises youthful energy, but one that will be tested by Palmeiras’ clever movement and physicality. With Sanchez expected to start in goal, the margin for error is slim.

Predicted Chelsea XI vs Palmeiras

Sanchez; Gusto, Chalobah, Colwill, Cucurella; James, Lavia; Madueke, Fernandez, Palmer; Delap

Kick-off is set for 2am BST on Saturday, 4 July 2025, and will be broadcast live on DAZN.
