Chelsea’s sporting directors are under even more fire than usual after a bad defeat to Aston Villa last night, and looking back at their record it’s easy to see why.

Their biggest success was of course Cole Palmer, and so it should be no surprise that anytime another talented former  Man City youngster comes onto the market we’re linked with them, especially when they’re young enough to fit our resale model.

Today we’ve heard rumours from CaughtOffside that next up could be James McAtee, who was a star for City’s youth teams before moving to Nottingham Forest in the summer.

He’s been unable to break into their first team, perhaps unsurprisingly given they’re fighting hard against relegation. But Chelsea are well aware of his talent, and according to these rumours they’re keen on signing the 23 year old on the cheap.

Forest paid £30m for him, and given he’s barely played would likely accept a similar figure or perhaps even less.

If you think that Chelsea are too good for him, just remember that Facundo Buonanotte is getting the occasional game for us right now. McAtee would be a much better option than the Argentine, with plenty of upside too. This is a very believable move, depending on Forest’s stance and whether they aim to use him more in the future.

In other news…

Reece James spoke to the club’s website after the game about how he and his teammates had failed to adapt to the changes made by Aston Villa midway through the game.

James also noted how well his team had done for large periods of the game – sadly games are not 65 minutes, and if you don’t score the goals your performance warrants you’ll always get punished.
