Chelsea return to Premier League action on Saturday afternoon as they host Burnley at Stamford Bridge, looking to solidify their push for Champions League qualification.
The Blues sit 14 places above their visitors in the table and are aiming to move into fourth place before Manchester United’s trip to Everton on Monday night. While Liam Rosenior’s side suffered a minor setback in their last league outing—surrendering a two-goal lead in a 2–2 draw with Leeds United—they responded emphatically with a 4–0 FA Cup triumph over Hull City last weekend. Conversely, Burnley arrive in London buoyed by a dramatic 3–2 comeback win over Crystal Palace. However, the Clarets remain nine points from safety and are desperate to secure consecutive top-flight victories for the first time since October.
Head coach Liam Rosenior has confirmed that Marc Cucurella will miss the clash due to a hamstring injury sustained against Leeds. However, there is better news regarding Cole Palmer and captain Reece James, who are both fit and available. The club remains without Levi Colwill, Romeo Lavia, and Jamie Gittens. Mamadou Sarr could retain his place after making his debut in the FA Cup, while Jorrel Hato—who joined the club from Ajax last summer—is expected to cover at left-back.
Scott Parker’s side is significantly depleted by injuries. Armando Broja has been ruled out against his former club, while Axel Tuanzebe faces a further three weeks on the sidelines. They join a long list of absentees, including Jordan Beyer, Connor Roberts, Josh Cullen, and Zeki Amdouni. Jaidon Anthony, who leads the Clarets in goals (6) and chances created (24) this term, will be the primary threat to the Blues’ backline.
The Blues have been a consistent scoring force this season. Notably, no team has scored in more different Premier League games than Chelsea this term (24). Historically, Chelsea have lost just one of their 19 Premier League games against Burnley (W13 D5). However, concentration remains a concern, as they have dropped more points from winning positions in home games (15) than any other side in the division. João Pedro enters the match in fine form with five goal involvements in his last five home games.
Burnley have found a strange level of comfort at this venue. Notably, seven of Burnley’s eight total Premier League points against Chelsea have come at Stamford Bridge, a remarkable 87.5% share. Despite this, their defensive record on the road is poor; the Clarets have failed to keep a clean sheet in each of their last 23 Premier League away matches. They will rely heavily on Jaidon Anthony to breach a Chelsea defence that has shown vulnerabilities in recent weeks.
Chelsea Predicted XI: Sanchez; Gusto, Fofana, Chalobah, Hato; Caicedo, Santos; Fernandez, Palmer, Neto; Pedro
Burnley Predicted XI: Dubravka; Walker, Laurent, Worrall, Esteve; Humphreys, Ugochukwu; Hannibal, Edwards, Anthony; Flemming
Due to the traditional 3 p.m. blackout, the match will not be broadcast live on television in the United Kingdom. Fans can follow live radio commentary on BBC Radio 5 Live.
