Chelsea want Jordan Henderson, a 36-year-old prized by elite coaches for leadership, stamina and standards.

According to NY Times, he is set to return to Stamford Bridge to sign for Xabi Alonso’s side. He will compete with Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, fitting Chelsea’s push for experience.

The appetite to prove himself dates to Sunderland, when Roy Keane hauled the under-21s back after a loss at Gateshead. Henderson spoke up, impressed Keane, and earned a first-team debut against Ajax. Three months later he came on at half-time in a 5-0 defeat at Chelsea.

He spent 12 seasons at Liverpool, seven as captain, overcoming doubts across the club. He lifted the Champions League in 2019 then the Premier League in 2020, the only Liverpool captain since Graeme Souness to win Europe’s club prize and the title in successive seasons.

Relationships shifted when Jurgen Klopp sought successors and, after a lucrative offer arose, Henderson chose Al Ettifaq. He regretted the move, with reputational damage jarred against his previous support for LGBTQ+ rights and Saudi Arabia’s criminalisation of same-sex activity and non-gender conformity.

By late 2023 he pushed for Europe, joined Ajax as captain, then helped Brentford to ninth. He made 22 starts and 10 sub appearances, and was picked for a record seventh major tournament at the 2026 World Cup. Thomas Tuchel praised his leadership, despite a celebrations injury.

Coaches long valued his work-rate. The question now is how much he plays at Chelsea, and whether that will satisfy him.
