Midfielder saw red for horror challenge in London derby

Moises Caicedo will be suspended for three games after he was shown a red card in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal.

The Blues earned a well-deserved point against the league leaders at Stamford Bridge thanks to Trevoh Chalobah’s opener, which got cancelled out by Mikel Merino’s header.

The home side held on for a share of the spoils, despite being down to 10 men after Caicedo was given his marching orders for a dangerous challenge on Merino.

The Ecuadorian went in studs-up on the Spaniard, with the pair both ending up on the turf in pain following the collision.

Caicedo was initially shown a yellow card by referee Anthony Taylor, but VAR John Brooks advised that the official take a look at the pitchside monitor for another look.

The decision was upgraded to a straight red, which elongates Caicedo’s suspension to three games.

The matches in question are two away trips to Leeds and Bournemouth, before a home meeting against Everton.

The suspension won’t carry over into the Champions League, leaving him free to face Atalanta on matchday six.

Caicedo will likely be back for Chelsea’s EFL Cup quarter-final at League One Cardiff City on December 16.

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca claimed referee inconsistency post-match, arguing that Piero Hincapie should also have seen red after an elbow on Chalobah, which saw the Blues’ goalscorer ice his cheekbone and the Arsenal defender cautioned.

The draw on Sunday left Chelsea six points adrift of their London rivals at the top of the Premier League.

Manchester City’s last-minute win over Leeds on Saturday saw them leapfrog the west Londoners into second, although they are still five points off the Gunners at the summit.
