The news today that Chelsea set an English record for pre-tax losses last season shouldn’t really surprise anyone who has been paying attention.
The club seem confident that they can get out of this tricky situation, but it highlights one of the most visible failures of this ownership. While they have now secured a front of shirt sponsor for the rest of this campaign, they still don’t have the big, multi-year deal they’ve been hunting for. That has cost them a major revenue stream.

Chelsea announce IFS as their front of shirt sponsor.
They’ve not managed it yet, after almost 4 seasons in charge. And it’s not going to get any easier it seems.
“It’s going to get ever harder now [for Chelsea to find a new FOS sponsor]. It’s going to become more crowded because I think I’m right that this is the last year of betting sponsors,” Matt Law said on the London is Blue podcast.
“So you have an influx of clubs, including Villa, Newcastle, Everton, who’ve all got betting sponsors, and now they come into the market to find non-betting sponsors for the front of shirts. And the market shrinks because there are only so many non-betting companies that can afford to or are interested.”

Chelsea have a major player problem on the horizon too, with Nicolas Jackson set to return from Bayern Munich where he’s been on loan. It looks like a new destination for him next summer.
There have been the first whispers this week about Alejandro Garnacho potentially leaving Chelsea this summer, although we’re not as convinced as some that will be easy to pull off.
