Chelsea’s top player of Club World Cup so far is an obvious choice | OneFootball

Looking ahead to this Club World Cup, we saw a number of players picked out for Chelsea as potential “big winners” in the USA.

Some even picked Andrey Santos – well, we all know how that’s going. But there are certainly some players who have done better than the poor Brazilian, who has yet to step on the field.

Neto impresses for Blues in USA

The answer to the player of the tournament so far for the Blues has to be Pedro Neto – not someone that necessarily would have been picked out by many.

But the scorer of a goal in each game so far, the Portuguese has been the outstanding player for Enzo Maresca, as the Athletic noted in their coverage:

“The Portuguese winger has plenty still to prove, and it does feel like his top-level career is just getting started,” They wrote.

“Neto entered the Club World Cup under a bit of pressure to perform… [he] has been a joy to watch and his aggressiveness on the wing has been impressive. He gives Chelsea an attacking outlet both in possession and in transition, his pace is a weapon.”

Neto times his rise well as expectations as increase

This was a good time for Neto to go up a level. He had a solid first season at the club, but expectations will rise in his second year, as will the competition. Estevao Willian will soon be wearing Blues, Geovany Quenda joins next summer, and we expect at least one other top attacker to join this summer.

As the Athletic put it: “this summer, Neto sent a message: sign a wonderkid if you like, but don’t forget the name on the back of his shirt,” referencing his celebration after scoring the opening goal against Flamengo.
