José Luis Chilavert has sparked backlash with transphobic remarks about Kylian Mbappé and fresh attacks on Vinícius Junior, after the racism row that stopped Benfica’s Champions League tie with Real Madrid.

On Tuesday, in the first leg of the Champions round of 32, Vinícius scored the winner then accused Gianluca Prestianni of racially abusing him after the Argentine covered his mouth to say something. He ran to inform the referee, the anti-racism protocol was applied and the match was halted for at least 10 minutes.

The former Paraguayan goalkeeper, who played for Real Zaragoza from 1988 to 1991, chose to side with Prestianni and to criticise Mbappé. “Who stands with Vinícius? Mbappé. What can he say? He talks about values, but he lives with a transvestite, that is not normal. Everyone can do as they wish, but it is not normal for a man to live with a transvestite, for that there is a woman.” He said this on Rivadavia AM630.

He also targeted the Brazilian forward, saying: “I stand with Prestianni because Vinícius is the first to insult everyone and he called Prestianni a coward.”

Before finishing, he insisted again that Vinícius was the first to insult Benfica players and he referred to him using racist terms such as monkey and the black-skinned one.
