This Saturday night at Estadio AKRON confirmed several things. First, that Guadalajara are playing the best soccer in Liga MX. Second, that Gabriel Milito’s squad defends the badge the right way. And third, that the Red-and-White Nation is unmatched.
All of that was reflected in the 1-0 victory over Club América in El Clásico de México, corresponding to Matchday 6 of the Clausura 2026. The result allowed the most popular and beloved team in Mexico to retain sole possession of first place in the standings with 18 points, the product of six wins in six matches to start the tournament.
With constant movement, fluid ball circulation, and a level of composure few teams can match, Chivas controlled a match that had generated enormous anticipation and put any doubts about their current form to rest. Through quick combinations, aggressive transitions, and unwavering determination, the Guadalajara side neutralized América until Armando González found the decisive goal, sending the Red-and-White Fortress into an eruption.
Matches like this always bring adversity, and Milito’s team knew how to endure. América pushed forward more with momentum than clear ideas, but Chivas absorbed the pressure, exploited the spaces behind the defense, and continued threatening in the opposing box until the final whistle. The Chivahermanos’ unwavering support was also crucial, as they gave their all in the stands for nearly 100 minutes of action.
After making this statement victory, Guadalajara will now begin a stretch of away matches, starting next Saturday when they visit Cruz Azul at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc for Matchday 7 of the Clausura 2026.
The winning goal
- “HormiGOOOL!” In the 41st minute, after sustained Red-and-White pressure, Armando González appeared inside the box to finish Diego Campillo’s flicked header following a corner delivered by Efraín Álvarez.
Dangerous chances
- The first chance belonged to Guadalajara. In just the 2nd minute, “Hormiga” appeared in the six-yard box to meet a cross from “Richy,” but the ball took an awkward bounce and he couldn’t direct it on target.
- In the 10th minute, Guadalajara built up play at the top of the box, featuring a couple of backheel touches from “Cotorro” and “Hormiga” inside the area, but the move did not end in the back of América’s net.
- Close from Ledezma! In the 12th minute, “Richy” broke free after a midfield recovery; upon reaching the area, he cut inside and fired a left-footed shot across goal, but it went just inches wide of the post.
- In the 35th minute, “Cotorro” had his chance after a great pass from Efraín Álvarez on the left, striking on the turn but hitting the side netting.
- 'Piojo!' In the 40th minute, Alvarado received the ball at the top of the box, set himself, and curled a left-footed shot toward the far post, forcing Malagón to stretch and make the save.
- Armando wanted a brace! In the 51st minute, he broke the line with a run onto a pass from “Oso” González into the area, faked the shot, rounded the goalkeeper, but the keeper recovered in time to send it out for a corner.
- In the 77th minute, with a sniper’s eye, “Piojo” held off his defender, found the exact moment, and aimed for the top corner, but Malagón’s glove sent the ball out for another corner.
