Birmingham City's head coach has spoken out on where the club will look to strengthen as the transfer window closes in on deadline day.

Chris Davies has admitted that Birmingham City may need to add another defender to their ranks in the final week of the January transfer window, as injuries continue to take hold at St. Andrew's.

Blues are currently 13th in the Championship after 29 games, five points off the play-offs after they drew 1-1 against Stoke City at the weekend. The fight for the top six is incredibly tight and the West Midlands outfit have more than a good enough chance of climbing the table in the next few months.

However, there have been significant injury problems in one area of the defence for Davies' side and Tom Wagner may have to dip into the transfer budget once again to help provide more cover.

Kai Wagner was brought to Birmingham earlier this month, signing a two-and-a-half year deal with last year's League One champions. But, there is plenty of responsibility on his shoulders to remain fit, and his head coach has opened up on the possibility of signing another left-back.

It's been an inconsistent first year back in the Championship for Blues, but supporters may have expected more considering just how strong they were in their promotion campaign last season.

However, injuries, especially in the left-back position, have been an issue and while Wagner has made a strong start to life in the West Midlands, both Alex Cochrane and Lee Buchanan are out for the foreseeable future and Davies has weighed in on whether another full-back is needed.

He said (via: Birmingham Live): "With Alex, my understanding is that the last month of the season is when we can think of him, so there’s uncertainty there.

"Kai has come in and done great, and looked really strong. It’s something we will discuss in the next few days whether we feel there’s something that needs to be done or whether we have got enough."

But, when asked about Buchanan, Davies did not have as much hope: "It’s been such a long injury that you’ve got to be cautious with that but we hope Lee can get up to speed. He would need a few under-21s games to build."

Kai Wagner has had a strong start to life at Birmingham City

At 28, Wagner is in the prime of his career, and he is proving his capabilities at Birmingham, with four excellent performances in his first four Championship games.

He picked up an assist against Coventry City on his debut, while he also found the back of the net for Blues in the FA Cup in an away game against Cambridge United.

Wagner has plenty of ability going forward, and his role as a modern-day full-back has been on full show at St. Andrew's. However, Davies knows that an injury or suspension for the German defender could cause chaos on the left flank.

Therefore, it is vital that another left-back is signed, at least until the end of the season, to ensure that Birmingham are not left short in that position.
