Christian Eriksen has moved to reassure supporters after becoming unwell during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine. The player said in a post that he is fine and at home with his family, and that his recovery has begun.

In the same message, the 34-year-old midfielder thanked team-mates who formed a circle to shield him from cameras and the crowd, and expressed appreciation for the medical staff on the pitch and the doctors who have cared for him over the years.

He said this incident is different from what happened in 2021.

His focus is on recovery, time with family, a holiday and playing football with his children.

Eriksen previously collapsed while playing for Denmark against Finland at Euro 2021, in the 42nd minute as he prepared to receive a throw-in. Team-mates and opponents rushed to help, with captain Simon Kjær crucial in positioning him to prevent choking.

Medics saved his life with CPR and a defibrillator shock before he was taken to hospital. He later had an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator fitted, a device that monitors heart rhythm and can deliver an internal shock if a dangerous arrhythmia is detected.
