As part of our schedule to best prepare for the challenges that lie ahead, the Blues will travel to Fiorentina for a friendly in Florence on Saturday 8 August.

It will be the third time we’ve played the Italian outfit and our first since a two-legged Champions League last-16 tie in March 2021.

CITY 3-0 FIORENTINA | 3 MARCH 2021

It was advantage City in the Champions League last-16 following a fantastic display by the Blues at the Joie Stadium in March 2021.

Gareth Taylor’s side blew away our opponents after four minutes where both Lauren Hemp and Ellen White netted inside the opening 240 seconds.

The current England international opened the scoring and gave City the perfect start when she headed home.

And Hemp turned provider shortly after when she whipped towards the back post for White to slam into the roof of the net.

Not content with one, White could have even completed a hat-trick inside ten minutes, forcing a smart save from Katja Schroffenegger before flashing a glancing header just over the bar moments later.

Following the interval, the hosts continued to push for a third which proved elusive until the cusp of stoppage time when United States icon Sam Mewis extended our advantage further.

The midfielder ghosted into the area and nodded a Chloe Kelly cross into the net which put the Blues in the driving seat heading into the second leg.

FIORNTINA 0-5 CITY | 11 MARCH 2021

Despite the strong scoreline advantage, City continued to put our foot on the gas in Italy and recorded a commanding 5-0 triumph, concluding the tie with an 8-0 aggregate victory.

Following strong link-up play with Hemp, White opened the scoring after another blisteringly quick start by Taylor’s team when firing into the bottom corner after nine minutes.

On 18 minutes it was two to the visitors when Caroline Weir coolly dispatched from the penalty spot, and we continued to apply pressure before the break which saw White smash home a cross.

Mewis was introduced after the interval and she once again made her presence felt against Fiorentina.

Only 15 minutes after entering play, she collected the ball and produced a driving run before applying a crisp finish into the net.

She then thumped her third in two outings against the Italian outfit into the net in what was a memorable performance on the continent by City.
