Claude Le Roy, pitchside during Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco, said he advised Sadio Mané to keep his team on the pitch during the late stoppage.
“Sadio came to ask me what I would do in his place, I told him, ‘I would ask your team-mates to come back’, quite simply,” he told AFP.
The interruption followed a foul on Brahim Diaz at 90+5, after which Senegal initially refused to return.
The former Senegal coach, who led the team from 1988 to 1992 and is now 77, was working as a consultant on the touchline, notably for Canal+ Afrique.
Mané acted on the advice. Édouard Mendy saved Brahim Diaz’s penalty, and Pape Gueye struck in the 94th minute of extra time to clinch a 1-0 win.
