Claudia Sheinbaum has said supporters travelling to Mexico for the World Cup from 11 June to 19 July will face no risk, after unrest that forced football postponements.
The turmoil followed a military operation in Jalisco on Sunday in which cartel figure Nemesio Oseguera was killed, and drug traffickers set up roadblocks and torched businesses. According to L'Équipe, normality returned after 24 hours, and on Tuesday she said all security guarantees would be in place for the tournament co-hosted with the United States and Canada.
Several fixtures were postponed overnight from Sunday into Monday, notably in Guadalajara, which is due to stage four World Cup matches.
All roadblocks have been lifted and schools shut after Sunday’s incidents will reopen on Wednesday, the president said.
Mexico is scheduled to host a national-team friendly against Iceland on Wednesday, then the World Cup play-offs from 26 to 31 March to decide the final two qualifiers.
