Lazio president Claudio Lotito was in good mood when discussing his team, especially following Thursday’s astonishing win over Viktoria Plzen.

After being reduced to nine men in the final minutes of the contest, the Biancocelesti would have been happy to escape the Czech Republic with an away draw in the first leg of the Europa League. Nevertheless, Gustav Isaksen’s last-minute strike gave the Italian capital side a sensational 2-1 lead ahead of next week’s decisive clash.

So while chatting with reporters outside the Italian senate (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Lotito heaped praise on his players, describing them as a band of fighters.

We have built a team of fighters and savvy veterans. We have players who fight on the field to represent the values we believe in and try to educate young people, not only from an athletic standpoint, but also spiritual. This attitude, to go on the field and give great joy to our fans, demonstrates this big passion we have. The results are the fruit of everyone’s work, starting from the masseurs, the storekeepers, the doctors and the coach who is the famous conductor. A team gets results if there is a great coach with a great management behind him.

The Lazio patron also reserved special praise for Isaksen who has been the club’s most decisive player in recent weeks.

We have been betting on him. We are convinced that he is a great player who still has the potential to grow together with several of his teammates who have recently arrived at Lazio and who will demonstrate their real value in the future.

I fear nothing. I remember a certain Coppa Italia final on May 26th [2013] that saw Lazio triumph, so I welcome an event that puts Italian football in the spotlight and boost the league’s coefficient.
