Club América have identified Seattle Sounders midfielder Obed Vargas as a target for Clausura 2026 and have made contact, ESPN reports. The teenager is also assessing his MLS future after the season finished.

The Mexico City side are planning for life after Jonathan dos Santos, whose current cycle is nearing its end. Vargas matches the profile sought in age and long-term potential.

Now 19, he is entering the final year of his Seattle contract and is not expected to renew. That could let him negotiate with other clubs in the near term.

Recently called up by Mexico, Vargas enjoyed a strong 2025 across multiple competitions. He won the Leagues Cup and featured in MLS, the Club World Cup and the U-20 World Cup in Chile, impressing for El Tri.

He has described appearing at the 2026 World Cup as his dream and said he will fight until the final call-up to make it happen.

That ambition could complicate talks with América, with Europe a preferred destination. Even so, neither he nor his representatives have ruled out hearing América’s proposal as the club aim to reassert themselves at the top of Mexican football.
