Cole Palmer has spoken for the first time since Thomas Tuchel left him out of England’s World Cup squad, saying he thinks he could have offered a different option.

“I think I could have offered something different to what the manager chose,” Palmer said, speaking to The Times on Saturday.

He called it “a decision I cannot change but it is difficult”, and wished the national side well. England play their last 16 tie against Mexico in the early hours of Monday, with kick-off at 2am.

The Chelsea attacking midfielder is 24 and has 14 caps for England, scoring two goals.

His omission has been debated, not least because he helped England reach the Euro 2024 final. Palmer is coming off a tougher season at Chelsea, finishing without a trophy and 10th in the Premier League.
