Colombia face Switzerland at BC Place, Vancouver, on Tuesday evening in the World Cup last 16, unbeaten in five matches and targeting their first quarter-final appearance since 2014.
Néstor Lorenzo’s side topped Group K and beat Ghana 1–0 in the last 32 to reach this stage. Switzerland, playing in only their fourth World Cup last 16, have found form after a slow start. Colombia are the slight favourites — and the only side to have beaten Switzerland in their previous World Cup encounter, a 2–0 win in 1994.
Jhon Córdoba is the only confirmed absentee. The Krasnodar striker suffered a groin injury in the eighth minute of the Ghana match and was immediately replaced by Luis Suárez.
The Sporting Lisbon forward went on to assist Jhon Arias’s winning goal and starts on Tuesday in Córdoba’s place. James Rodríguez was substituted at half-time against Ghana but carries no injury concern and is expected to start.
The Minnesota United midfielder, 34 years old and appearing at his fourth World Cup, continues to dictate tempo from the number ten role. Luis Díaz of Bayern Munich, who registered 26 goals and 19 assists across all competitions this season, leads the left flank as Colombia’s primary creative threat.
Lorenzo is expected to name an unchanged defensive unit. Camilo Vargas continues in goal behind a back four of Daniel Muñoz, Davinson Sánchez, Jhon Lucumí and Johan Mojica. Colombia have conceded just once in five World Cup matches — the best defensive record of any side remaining in the tournament.
Colombia possible starting XI (4-3-3): Vargas; Muñoz, Sánchez, Lucumí, Mojica; Lerma, Arias, Puerta; Rodríguez, Suárez, Díaz
The match will be broadcast live on ITV1 and ITVX in the UK.
