Inter Milan secured their second consecutive Serie A win last Sunday, pulling off a stunning comeback at Como.
According to Corriere dello Sport via FCInterNews, the Nerazzurri defied the absence of their captain, Lautaro Martinez, to extend their lead at the top of the table.
Cristian Chivu’s men have developed a habit of underperforming when unable to call upon the leading Serie A goalscorer.
Indeed, they had gone winless in three successive league outings without El Toro before the international break.
However, Inter bounced back from a two-goal deficit to beat Como 4-3 at Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia last weekend.
More importantly, the Nerazzurri engineered a stunning turnaround in the Argentine striker’s absence.
Marcus Thuram had been under fire for a disappointing start to the new calendar year. Yet, the Frenchman excelled on Sunday, netting a brace to initiate Inter’s comeback.
Furthermore, diminutive midfielder Nicolo Barella chipped in with two assists, setting up the 28-year-old for both goals.
Then, Denzel Dumfries turned the game on its head with a second-half brace, scoring his first Serie A goals since August.
Star playmaker Hakan Calhanoglu served the Dutchman on a silver platter with a trademark set-piece delivery for Inter’s third.
It was just what Chivu’s side needed to prove they can deliver without relying on Lautaro.
