Manchester City are in action at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night as they face Real Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie.
The Blues arrive in Madrid full of confidence, riding an 11-game unbeaten run across all competitions and buoyed by Saturday’s commanding 3-1 FA Cup fifth round victory over Newcastle United at St. James’ Park, in which a rotated City side came from behind to progress to the quarter-final.
Guardiola now reverts to his strongest available starting XI for what is undoubtedly the most significant fixture of City’s season so far. City already beat Madrid on their own patch in the league phase, with Nico O’Reilly‘s opportunistic strike and Erling Haaland‘s penalty helping them fight back from a goal down to claim a 2-1 victory in December 2025.
The Blues have strengthened considerably since that encounter, with Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi arriving in January, while Rodri – absent for the December clash – returns to the midfield.

This marks the fifth consecutive season these two sides have been drawn together in the UEFA Champions League knockout rounds and the rivalry shows no signs of losing its intensity. The all-time head-to-head record is perfectly level, with both clubs registering six wins apiece from their previous 15 meetings.
As for Real Madrid, head coach Alvaro Arbeloa faces a daunting task. Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham are sidelined with injury, with Rodrygo‘s season already over. David Alaba, Eder Militao, Dani Ceballos and Alvaro Carreras are also unavailable, leaving Arbeloa desperately short across multiple positions.
The absence of Mbappe, who leads the UEFA Champions League scoring charts with 13 goals, is a particularly significant blow. For City, the injury picture is far more encouraging. Josko Gvardiol, Mateo Kovacic and Rico Lewis are ruled out but the rest of Guardiola’s squad is fit and available.
Erling Haaland was rested for Saturday’s FA Cup tie at Newcastle but is not carrying an injury and is firmly in line to lead the line at the Santiago Bernabéu tonight. The Norwegian has netted 10 times in his last 10 European games against Spanish clubs – a record that will give Guardiola enormous encouragement.

Guardiola, meanwhile, makes a piece of history this evening: tonight is his 190th Champions League game as a manager, drawing level with Sir Alex Ferguson.
