Manchester United have exercised the one-year options in four players’ contracts since the turn of the year.
Indeed, The Guardian’s Tom Garry has confirmed today that Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Lisa Naalsund and Gabby George will remain at Marc Skinner’s disposal until June 2027, as opposed to their previous release dates in five months’ time.
Skinner himself also has a decision to make on his future, as his terms are due to expire next summer, although the club can choose to extend his stay until 2028. Doing so would see his tenure extend to eight years at the helm of United Women, having first taken the reins in 2021.
United currently sit fourth-placed in the Women’s Super League standings after 11 matches, and theyqualified for the last-16 of the Champions League, where they’ll face Atletico Madrid, via their sixth-placed finish.

In regard to the men, Ruben Amorim also has a quartet of players who could leave as free agents when the season draws to a close: Casemiro, Harry Maguire, Tyrell Malacia and Tom Heaton.
Only Casemiro’s stay can be extended via his contract option. However, it’s thought the board are reluctant to do so, as it’ll mean he continues earning his exorbitant £350,000-a-week wages for a further 12 months.
Malacia and Heaton are expected to pull the curtains on their Old Trafford careers, the latter of which will likely call time on his playing career entirely, with his last competitive performance coming all the way back in 2023.

United have yet to make a firm decision on Maguire’s future. Like Casemiro, it’s thought he will have to agree to a reduction on his wages, worth £190,000 per week, to stay beyond the summer.
That being said, the seasoned centre-half has spent the best part of 2025/2026 thus far sidelined with injuries, meaning United may be reluctant to keep him in the ranks long-term.
