Flamengo’s trip to Independiente Medellín in the CONMEBOL Libertadores was halted on Thursday, the match cancelled after disorder in the stands at the Estadio Atanasio Girardot. On Friday, the governing body set out its position on the fourth-round group fixture.

CONMEBOL said in a statement that the game between Independiente Medellín and Flamengo, part of the CONMEBOL Libertadores 2026 group stage, was cancelled due to a lack of security guarantees from the home club and the competent authorities to ensure the match could continue.

The federation added that, with club manual procedures applied, the case will be sent to CONMEBOL’s judicial bodies for the appropriate determinations. Information on incidents inside and outside the stadium will go to the Disciplinary Committee.

Flamengo now await that disciplinary ruling. The most likely outcome is a walkover in their favour, which would hand them three points.

Those points are significant for Leonardo Jardim’s side. With three more, they would be through to the last 16 with two rounds to spare, then needing only one further win to seal first place in Group A.

While they wait, Flamengo have begun preparations for their next outing. They visit Grêmio on Sunday 10 at 19:30 Brasília time, at the hosts’ arena, in the 15th round of the Brasileirão.
