Manchester United couldn’t strengthen their midfield in the recently closed transfer window.

United prioritised adding firepower to their attack ahead of the new season and splurged north of £200 million on Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko.

After Sesko’s arrival, the Red Devils explored the possibility of signing Carlos Baleba from Brighton & Hove Albion. However, Brighton refused to entertain any discussion about a summer move.

Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming United also tried to sign Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid in the final days of the window. However, they failed to find an agreement with the La Liga outfit before Monday’s deadline.

Manchester United want to sign Gallagher

According to Fichajes, Gallagher remains on United’s radar and the Premier League giants “will return to the fray” in January.

Ruben Amorim is keen to add intensity to his midfield. As such, the tenacious midfielder’s profile is admired at Old Trafford.

Atletico turned down United’s loan proposal in the summer, but they are open to letting Gallagher leave.

It is understood that United are considering making a permanent move in January “if the terms are favorable.”

The Mancunians are viewed as “the leading candidates” to secure the Englishman’s services.

Gallagher willing to leave Atletico

Gallagher left Chelsea to move to the Spanish capital in the summer of 2024. The 25-year-old has played regularly under Diego Simeone, but he is not seen as an undisputed starter at the club.

It is believed the England international is “ready to leave” Atletico as the prospect of returning to the Premier League appeals to him.

The ex-Chelsea and Crystal Palace man feels he still has a lot to prove in England, and an important role under Amorim at Old Trafford could bolster his chances of making the England squad for the World Cup next summer.
