In an official statement, Rayo Vallecano broke its silence hours after the controversy erupted over Pathé Ciss's retweet, the Africa Cup of Nations champion with Senegal.
Hours after Pathé Ciss retweeted a message calling Rayo a "shitty club" due to the lack of a tribute following his victory at AFCON 2025, the Madrid-based club moved to clarify the situation. In an official note, Rayo explained that no tribute was held that day because the team was wearing black armbands and observed a minute of silence in honor of the victims of the tragic train accidents in Adamuz and Gelida.
"Rayo Vallecano reports that yesterday, the tribute to our player Pathé Ciss, following his triumph at the Africa Cup of Nations, did not take place because it was deemed inappropriate to hold any celebration on a day of mourning, when the team wore black armbands and observed a minute of silence in memory of those who lost their lives in the tragic train accidents in Adamuz and Gelida. Pathé Ciss's well-deserved recognition will be held ahead of the next match, which will take place at Vallecas on Saturday, February 7, against Real Oviedo." the Spanish club announced.
This statement should help ease tensions and allow everyone to move past the controversy.
