Corinthians board discuss investigations into ex-presidents

On the afternoon of this Monday, 8, the president of the Deliberative Council (CD) of Corinthians, Romeu Tuma Júnior, and the vice-president, Leonardo Pantaleão, gave a press conference at Parque São Jorge. Among the topics discussed was the possibility of expelling former presidents Andrés Sanchez and Duilio Monteiro Alves from the membership of Timão.

Tuma Júnior reported that he received nine investigation requests against the former directors of Corinthians, all already forwarded to the Justice Commission. According to him, documents related to the case were requested, and, if infractions are proven, there will be no room for impunity. Among the possible punishments for the former leaders is disaffiliation from the club.

“The two were accused of misuse of the corporate card, we had eight representations in this sense, from members, from councilors, the two also submitted a request for this to be investigated, so we have there between accusation, defense and request for investigation, at least nine requests”, he began.

“The requests were presented by members, councilors, all of them were joined, not only processed, they were instituted to the Justice Commission, last week or the week before, sorry, I will not remember exactly. I have already ordered several investigations that were requested by the Justice Commission”, Tuma continued.

“There has already been a request for documents, because all this is done according to the statute through the presidency of the Council. The statute determines that the commissions, when they are acting, they need to request documents through the presidency of the Council. I have already deliberated, several charges have already been made, I am waiting for this documentation and the commission has also already scheduled to hear some people who have information to give in this sense”, he continued.

“So everything is being investigated and in due course, when the commission concludes its work, it will point out if it finds any statutory infraction. Everyone is subject to being held accountable. There is no risk of anyone, if the commission understands that there are reasons for them to be held accountable, whoever it is within the Corinthians institution, not undergoing due process”, added the CD president.

Leonardo Pantaleão, who is also the current president of the Corinthians Ethics Commission, pointed out that he cannot give a detailed answer about the process against the former presidents at this moment, as the issue is still being dealt with by the Justice Commission.

“I want to start by telling you the following: that at Corinthians, Ethics can no longer be just a discourse, it has to become practice. Why am I saying this? Because exactly on this reasoning is that I, as a member of the Ethics Commission, cannot delve into a response like this, because consequently I would be being unethical and also putting myself as impeded from eventually participating by making some kind of pre-judgment in relation to this”, he pondered.

“What I can say, and let it be clear to everyone, this specific procedure involving the misuse of corporate cards is not yet under the custody of the Ethics Commission. President Romeu Tuma has already said that this procedure is still in the Justice Commission, so it has not yet come for the Ethics Commission to take the measures that it should eventually take according to the internal regulations of the Ethics Commission itself”, he continued.

“When it comes, the measures will then be adopted. What measures? It will be forwarded to my care, I will then appoint someone to be the rapporteur of this procedure within the Ethics Commission and then the measures will be developed, such as the eventual hearing, if necessary, if it needs to complement something from the Justice Commission”, Pantaleão continued.

“That's why even President Romeu Tuma asked that, even to save time, I would follow the progress of this procedure in the Justice Commission. So all this will be done. I just can't extend myself in an objective answer to your question, so as not to make my participation impossible when it arrives at the Ethics Commission itself”, the director concluded.

The administrations of Duilio Monteiro Alves and Andrés Sanchez at the helm of Corinthians are also being investigated by the Public Prosecutor's Office of São Paulo. In addition to the misuse of the corporate card, the MP is investigating accusations of alleged irregularities in invoices. This Monday, in fact, the club began to send the requested documents to the public agency for the investigation.

The delivery occurs after pressure from prosecutor Cássio Conserino, who had demanded the sending of the documents since July 30. In the dispatch of the Criminal Investigation Procedure (PIC), the prosecutor highlighted that Osmar Stabile, then interim president, Romeu Tuma Júnior, president of the Deliberative Council, and financial manager Roberto Gaviolli were already aware of the requests during their hearings on August 14.

In addition, the prosecutor had set a deadline of 24 hours for the delivery of the Corinthians corporate card invoices, referring to the period between January 2018 and May 2025, under the risk of initiating a police investigation “under penalty of disobedience”.

Last week, the Public Prosecutor's Office also requested the court to temporarily remove the three former presidents from the main organs of the club until the investigations are concluded. Andrés Sanchez and Duilio Monteiro Alves remain as lifelong councilors of Corinthians and native members of the Guidance Council (CORI), while Augusto Melo lost his political rights in the club after his dismissal and currently holds no position in the club.
