Corinthians board president and vice reflect on club's credibility crisis

On the afternoon of this Monday, the 8th, Parque São Jorge hosted a press conference with Romeu Tuma Júnior and Leonardo Pantaleão, respectively the president and vice-president of the Deliberative Council (the latter also chairs the club's Ethics and Discipline Committee). Both addressed various topics about the Alvinegro, dedicating some time to discuss the need for Timão to regain credibility.

Tuma spoke on the matter when questioned by Central do Timão about the fans' disbelief regarding the future of Corinthians. “I have a broader perspective. The recovery of credibility will not be achieved solely through advice, statutory changes, or management. I believe it requires the participation of everyone involved. We must (also) acknowledge the progress so that we can understand that the situation is improving and, consequently, restore credibility”, he said.

According to the president of the CD, the current Corinthians' accounting system is flawed, including communication with the press and fans, something that resulted in five impeachment processes during Augusto Melo's administration, he recalled: “The CORI requested documents and did not receive them, and the issue of the corporate credit card came to light due to a specific expense. And if the CORI does not obtain the requested information, neither the fans nor the media will have answers.”

For Tuma, this type of conduct from past administrations fueled the sense of lack of credibility, adding that everyone at Corinthians must “take responsibility and work together” to change this scenario, pointing out the role of the Deliberative Council in overseeing the board's actions with thematic committees and information requests when necessary.

“This is a chronic problem that transcends the momentary lack of credibility. This is a persistent issue, as I have observed as an opposition councilor for almost 30 years. It was a persistent problem, with councilors speaking in vain in the plenary without repercussion. On one occasion, I raised this issue through you.”

Finally, Tuma also reminded that everyone in the CD is responsible for the decisions of the body, expressing an opinion on the electoral process that forms the body every three years: “The 300 councilors have the power to vote, and my role is to organize the functioning of the plenary and ensure that these debates are held. But I believe the vote should be individual, allowing each councilor to be elected with greater representation. Everyone would have the opportunity to be elected and represent various factions, which, in my view, would bring more balance and logic in the relationship with the presidency.”

Pantaleão also spoke on the subject, recalling his first arrival to the board in 2024, still under Augusto Melo's administration. “I said, folks, has it always been like this? Has it always been this strange? But they said no, it wasn't, that I can hope for better days. So I'm holding onto that”, he said.

The Ethics president sought to explain how he analyzes the possible difficulties of the then-interim administration of Osmar Stabile in providing certain clarifications about the actions taken by the board: “I think it would be fair on our part to balance the scales because when we talk about an interim administration and we all envision here what it was, the moment the club was living, President Osmar ended up suddenly taking over and having to deal with a series of problems that needed to be resolved.”

For Pantaleão, the political and administrative context of the club at the time Stabile assumed as interim allows for a “leniency” in demands, something that would cease to exist, according to the councilor, now that the president has been confirmed through indirect election. “Now, yes, in my view, the standard must be the same, just as the previous administration was held accountable for not presenting documents, balances, as the club's rules occasionally require, the rule must be exactly the same for the current administration”, he explained.

He continued his reasoning, concluding the response: “Because by putting this into practice, gradually, it will denote the credibility we so much seek to achieve. Both being in the same context, in the same scenario, the demand must be the same, the requirement must be the same, and above all, the consequences must also be the same, that's how I see it.”
