José Martínez’s spell at Corinthians could be nearing its end, with the club studying a contract termination for just cause after his left knee injury. According to Café com Setorista, the board are assessing the option.

Senior figures have consulted the legal department to review the possibility. The Venezuelan sustained a rupture of the cruciate ligaments in his left knee during the holidays. His deal runs until 31 December 2027.

He returned on Saturday and reported pain in the same knee. On Sunday, after defeat to Palmeiras, coach Dorival Júnior said he had been sent to the medical department.

On Monday, footage showed him in a festive match in Venezuela wearing a brace on his left knee, and limping in event videos.

The midfielder had already tested the staff’s patience by reporting back over a month late. Dorival Júnior has said he struggled to communicate with the player and noted the shortage of defensive midfielders, which magnified his absence.

He travelled home to regularise his passport, but was unable to return after border closures amid the political crisis. He informed the club that the new document was requested on 13 January.

With Martínez unavailable, Dorival Júnior currently has only Raniele and Charles for the role. He should now be reinforced by Allan, on loan from Flamengo until the end of 2026.
