Corinthians edge Botafogo away with late comeback in NBB

On the night of this Monday (19th), Corinthians visited Botafogo at the Oscar Zelaya Gymnasium, in a match valid for the 24th game of the Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB), and won by a score of 74 to 73. With this triumph, the Alvinegro achieves its second consecutive victory in the national competition and jumped from seventh to sixth place with 16 wins and eight losses – 40 points.

The match was delayed by more than 30 minutes due to leaks in the roof of the Carioca team's gymnasium. After help from Botafogo fans, the game was able to start. To begin the game, coach Jece Leite lined up the following team: Davaunta Thomas, Victão, Rafael Munford, Elyjah Clark, and Lucas Cauê. The bench had the following options: Matheus Jamelão, Kaique Raymundo, Gabriel Novaes, Cauê Borges, and Tico Faria.

The opening minutes of the match between the teams were uneventful, as the condition of the gym floor caused both sides to be cautious. Afterwards, Botafogo showed a slightly better performance, but Alvinegro strung together a series of three-pointers, winning the first quarter 21 to 14 and then saw the rival react and win the second quarter 21 to 15. Despite this, the Corinthians team went into halftime leading 36 to 35.

The third and fourth periods saw alternating dominance between Botafogo and Corinthians, as well as constant changes in the lead. In the final period, Alvinegro saw Botafogo open up a five-point lead. However, in the final moments, the club from Parque São Jorge responded and regained the lead with three-pointers from Victão and the efficiency of Elyjah Clark and Kauan Raymundo to win 74 to 73.

The top scorer for Corinthians in the match was Clark, who scored 19 points and five assists. Victão, in turn, accumulated 11 points and five rebounds, and finally, Lucas Cauê with nine points and nine rebounds. The club from Parque São Jorge will now return to the court only next Sunday (25th), at 11 am, to face Minas at Arena UniBH, for the quarterfinals of the Copa Super 8.
