Corinthians reached the Campeonato Paulista semi-finals on Sunday, edging Portuguesa 8-7 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Canindé. The result extended their dominance in knockout meetings, with three qualifications from four ties.

Portuguesa led through Zé Vitor, but Vitinho equalised in second-half stoppage time to force the shootout. Goalkeeper Hugo Souza saved two spot-kicks as Corinthians prevailed after nine attempts each.

The clubs' first elimination clash came on 10 February 1973 in the Laudo Natel Tournament quarter-final at Palestra Itália, where Corinthians won 1-0 through Ademir. They went on to lift the trophy by beating Palmeiras in the final.

On 4 June 1990, the Taça Vicente Matheus decider finished 1-1 in normal time, Lê for Portuguesa and Tupãzinho for Corinthians, before Portuguesa took the title 4-3 on penalties.

Their 1998 Paulista semi-final featured two games at Morumbi, a 1-1 first leg with Didi scoring for Corinthians, then a 2-2 return as Rincón and Marcelinho struck. Corinthians advanced by virtue of the better record in the previous phase.

Corinthians now face Novorizontino in the semi-final on Saturday, 28 at 20:30 at Estádio Doutor Jorge Ismael de Biasi. Palmeiras face São Paulo in the other tie. Before that, Corinthians visit Cruzeiro at Mineirão on Wednesday at 20:00 in the fourth round of the Campeonato Brasileiro.
