Corinthians fall to first Liga Sul-Americana defeat at Wlamir Marques

Corinthians faced Defensor Sporting from Uruguay on Saturday night, in the second round of the South American Basketball League (LSB) – the second largest continental men's basketball competition – at the Wlamir Marques Gymnasium, and won with a score of 81 to 76.

Coach Bruno Guidorizzi fielded the following team to start the match: Elyjah Clark, Elinho, Davaunta Thomas, Victão, and Gabriel Novaes. Two other players who entered the game were Rafael Munford and Lucas Cauê. The first quarter for Corinthians had Davaunta Thomas and Elinho as the main highlights, opening an 11-point lead in the first 10 minutes.

In the second quarter, the Uruguayan team reacted with Facundo Terra and Metzger reducing Corinthians' lead, which ended the second quarter still ahead on the scoreboard. However, from the third period, the Uruguayans, led by Metzger – who scored 30 points in the match – took the lead in the game.

In the last quarter, Corinthians tried to react but couldn't overcome the opponent's defense and suffered their first defeat in the competition. The top scorer for the Alvinegro in the match was Davaunta Thomas with 25 points. The final score for each period was: 30 x 19 (Corinthians), 45 x 41 (Corinthians), 63 x 56 (Defensor Sporting – URU), and 81 x 76 (Defensor Sporting – URU).

The first phase of the South American League consists of four groups with four teams, with the teams facing each other in a single round. So far, Corinthians has one win and one loss in the tournament; Quimsa from Argentina is the group leader with two victories. The Alvinegro will return to the court this Sunday at 7:10 PM (Brasília time) against Quimsa at Wlamir Marques for the third round of the international competition.
