Corinthians lawyer welcomes FT vote deal, warns on final proposal

Last Friday (5th), the Neo Química Arena hosted the second public hearing on the statutory reform of Corinthians, focusing on the voting rights of FT members. Among the participants, the event included representatives from organized fan groups, including the board of Gaviões da Fiel – President Ale even spoke at the beginning of the proceedings.

Immediately after the hearing concluded, journalists were able to hear from Edson Oliveira, the lawyer for the organized group, in an interview in the press anteroom of the stadium. He celebrated the consensus reached by the participants on the need for members of the Fiel Torcedor program to be able to vote in the club's general assemblies, something he called a “great evolution.”

“If you think back to the beginning, when we considered putting this to a vote and people said it was madness, a utopia, we can consider today's result as good. There are still situations that need to be better understood. Our proposal is that (those who have been) FT members for three years can vote in the next election. And those who join now can vote three years later in the subsequent election. This public hearing is super important. We will participate in all the others. And we hope that the final text will align with what was discussed here.”

Edson also explained that the satisfaction with the consensus in the speeches now needs to be followed by practical application in the final proposal text within the project. “In this type of situation involving a change in the statute, something unsatisfactory can always come up at the last minute. So, (we are) satisfied with the conversation, I think it progressed. As I said some time ago, this would not have been feasible. And now we understand that, yes, it is a great possibility, especially for Corinthians to be helped once again by the Corinthians fans to improve this deplorable situation we find ourselves in,” he said.

He further expressed opposition to charging an extra fee to acquire voting rights: “Corinthians fans have suffered too much for a long time. It doesn’t make sense to charge an extra fee to be able to vote. The Corinthians fan buys jerseys, buys tickets, they support the club. If it weren't for the Corinthians fan, it would have ended already. (They) will already pay monthly to be a member in this category, where they won’t even frequent the club. The Corinthians fan just wants to help, but it doesn’t make sense to have an extra fee. It’s illogical.”

Finally, Edson analyzed how the FT vote could also qualify candidates within Parque São Jorge. “It seems to me that in this (statute) model there are some criteria that could supposedly improve this qualification, but we don’t see this as a reality, because deep down, the person needs to have two terms as a counselor, and that’s simply what qualifies. So, to be honest, we can’t see this with this statute change, because this criterion excludes potentially qualified people who don’t want to participate in club politics. So, I understand some discussions in the sense that if you’ve been a member for 15 years, you wouldn’t need to be a counselor, maybe that’s a benefit, but this is something that needs further study,” he concluded.
