Corinthians look to strong record against Sport to end away win drought

On the afternoon of this Sunday, the 21st, Corinthians returns to the field for the Brazilian Championship. In a match valid for the 24th round of the competition, Timão travels to Recife, where they will face Sport at Ilha do Retiro at 5:30 PM (Brasília time). The club seeks to continue its recovery in the tournament, where it currently occupies the tenth position, with 29 points, having recorded seven wins, eight draws, and eight losses.

To consolidate its good phase, however, the Alvinegro will need to break a taboo that, although formed by a few games, has lasted nine years. This is because the last Corinthians victory at Ilha do Retiro occurred on May 29, 2016, in the Brasileirão, with a score of 2 x 0 (goals by Lucca and Marquinhos Gabriel). Since then, the teams have faced each other twice at the stadium, with two local victories by 1 x 0 in 2017 and 2020 – games also for the Brasileirão.

Overall, Corinthians' performance at Sport's home is negative. Since the first meeting between them at the stadium, there have been 23 matches, with only six Alvinegro victories, five draws, and 12 losses, along with 23 goals for and 32 goals against. The most important game in the history also ended badly for Timão, as they were defeated 3 x 1 in the final of the 2008 Copa do Brasil, finishing as runners-up on that occasion.

However, Corinthians also has positive records in the direct confrontation with the Pernambuco team. Considering the games for the Brazilian Championship, for example, the teams have faced each other 42 times, with 18 Alvinegro victories, nine draws, and 15 losses, along with 57 goals for and 49 goals against – a regular performance of exactly 50% of the points.

In turn, in the total numbers of the duel, 47 matches have been recorded, with Corinthians obtaining 20 victories, ten draws, and 17 losses, along with 67 goals for and 58 goals against – a similar performance to the previous one, of 49.6%. If they win again this Sunday, Timão will reach 32 points in the Brasileirão, returning to the top half of the standings.
