Corinthians’ number 10 on missed Derby penalty in Paulista

Corinthians forward, Memphis Depay, gave an interview to Romário TV last Monday (9th), a day after the team's defeat in the Derby against Palmeiras, 1-0, at Neo Química Arena, during the seventh round of the first phase of the 2026 Paulista Championship, and commented on the missed penalty in the first half.

The incident occurred at 37 minutes into the first half, when the Dutchman himself took a corner from the left and the opposing goalkeeper, Carlos Miguel, committed a penalty on defender Gustavo Henrique. Before the kick, Palmeiras midfielder, Andreas Pereira, damaged the penalty spot. During the kick, the Corinthians forward slipped and shot wide.

“There were many things happening there. The captain (Gustavo Henrique) was there and I asked him. We have 11 players on the field, and we need to protect ourselves. Normally, there should be a player there to protect the penalty spot, but there wasn't. I looked at the penalty spot and everything seemed fine, but the grass was already damaged. When I placed my supporting foot, I lost my balance,” he said.

Signed by Corinthians in September 2024, after not renewing his contract with Atlético de Madrid, Spain, Memphis Depay was crucial in the team's rise in the Brazilian Championship that year (from the relegation zone to the Pre-Libertadores and a spot in the Copa do Brasil), as well as being decisive in the victories of the Paulista Championship and Copa do Brasil in 2025, against Palmeiras and Vasco da Gama, respectively.

In 2026, he was part of the squad that won the Brazilian Super Cup in Brasília, beating Flamengo in the final, 2-0. With the Corinthians jersey, he has scored 19 goals and made 15 assists in 69 matches (54 of them as a starter), with 37 wins, 14 draws, and 18 losses – a 60.39% success rate.
