Corinthians outplay Palmeiras but miss chances, lose at home

On the evening of this Sunday (8th), Corinthians hosted Palmeiras at 8:30 PM (Brasília time) at the Neo Química Arena, for the seventh round of the first phase of the 2026 Paulista Championship and left the field defeated 1-0 in a game marked by many missed chances.

In the first half, Corinthians was superior to their rival and had more possession of the ball. However, they faced a Palmeiras defending in a low block and betting on counterattacks, making it difficult to create plays. Even so, Timão had the best opportunities and even had a penalty chance with Memphis, who ended up missing and didn't change the score in the first half.

In the second half, Corinthians continued to dominate the rival, but still lacked efficiency to turn the large volume of play into goals. Nearing the end, Garro lost the ball in midfield and conceded a counterattack that resulted in a goal by Flaco López. With the lead, the opponent took longer to put the ball back in play and held onto the result.

Next commitment

After facing Palmeiras in Itaquera for the state championship, Corinthians shifts its focus to the Brazilian Championship. Next Thursday (12th), at 8:00 PM (Brasília time), the Alvinegro will face Red Bull Bragantino at the Neo Química Arena, for the third round of the national competition.

Corinthians lineup

The Corinthians technical staff had four absences for the Derby. They are: left-back Hugo Farias (right knee injury), midfielder José Martínez (recently returned), midfielder André Carrillo (muscle discomfort), and forward Kaio César (muscle injury in the right thigh).

Thus, Corinthians started the match with: Hugo Souza; Matheuzinho, Gabriel Paulista, Gustavo Henrique, and Matheus Bidu; Raniele, André, Matheus Pereira, and Breno Bidon; Memphis Depay and Yuri Alberto.

The bench had the following options: Felipe Longo, João Pedro, Cacá, André Ramalho, Pedro Milans, Charles, Rodrigo Garro, Kayke, Vitinho, Pedro Raul, Dieguinho, and Gui Negão.

Palmeiras lineup

Coach Abel Ferreira lined up his team with: Carlos Miguel; Khellven, Murilo, Gustavo Gómez, and Joaquín Piquerez; Marlon Freitas, Andreas Pereira, Allan, and Maurício; Flaco López and Vitor Roque.

On the bench were: Lomba, Bruno Fuchs, Giay, Jefté, Bruno Rodrigues, Sosa, Lucas Evangelista, Luighi, Emiliano Martínez, Riquelme, Larson, and Pacheco.

Refereeing

The referee was Raphael Claus, assisted by Danilo Ricardo Simon Manis and Evandro de Melo Lima. The fourth referee and VAR were, respectively, Fagson Junior dos Santos Silva and Thiago Luis Scarascati. All were appointed by the Paulista Football Federation (FPF).

First half

The first attack attempt was by Corinthians. In the first minute, Corinthians took advantage of Khellven's mistake, Memphis received in the area, turned, and passed to Yuri Alberto. Corinthians' number 9 was blocked and won a corner.

At seven minutes, Andreas Pereira took a corner, the ball stayed alive in the area, Gustavo Gómez set it up for the middle, and Flaco López attempted a bicycle kick but didn't reach the ball. At 11, Vitor Roque got the rebound in Corinthians' area and shot across, but Hugo Souza saved in two attempts.

At 12 minutes, Matheuzinho switched play and found Memphis entering freely in Palmeiras' area. He crossed, Yuri Alberto headed and sent it close to Carlos Miguel's left post.

At 14, Palmeiras had a free kick diagonally to the area, and Andreas Pereira attempted a shot but sent it into the side netting. At 17 minutes, Memphis received on the right wing and gave a great pass to Breno Bidon inside the area. Number 7 adjusted his body and shot placed, but couldn't find the right direction and sent it out.

At 21, Andreas Pereira tried from very far, and the ball went to the right of Hugo Souza's goal. At 29 minutes, it was Mauricio's turn to try from outside the area and send it out, without much danger to the Corinthians goalkeeper.

At 33 minutes, Memphis took a corner, Gustavo Henrique rose with Marlon Freitas, and then Carlos Miguel tried to punch and hit the defender's head. Raphael Claus awarded the penalty to Corinthians.

Memphis Depay went for the shot and ended up sending it out after slipping before reaching the ball. Before the shot, midfielder Andreas Pereira scraped his boot studs on the penalty spot to try to alter the pitch and disrupt the Corinthians finish.

There were no new dangerous plays, and the halftime score was 0-0.

Second half

The second half began with Palmeiras trying to attack more. At two minutes, Allan received in the midfield, carried with space, and shot at Hugo Souza. At five, Khellven received at the edge of the area and tried a cross shot but sent it far from the goal.

At 13 minutes, from a Breno Bidon free kick, Corinthians sent a dangerous ball into the area, it bounced off Palmeiras defenders and was cleared. At 15 minutes, Memphis received at the edge of the area, turned, and shot, but Carlos Miguel parried it.

At 20, Matheus Bidu received with space from far and attempted a long shot, forcing Carlos Miguel to parry and send it for a corner. At 21 minutes, Matheuzinho received at the end and crossed low. Carlos Miguel missed the ball, but no one arrived to tap it in, and Khellven cleared for a corner.

At 22, Memphis took a corner to the far post, Gabriel Paulista headed it full on, and Carlos Miguel made an important save to prevent the goal. At 23 minutes, Palmeiras launched a counterattack, and Luighi passed to Flaco López. Number 42 shot, but Breno Bidon arrived with a sliding tackle to block the shot providentially.

At 24 minutes, Andreas Pereira took a corner, Gómez didn't head it, nor did Murilo, but the ball fell to Luighi, whose shot was blocked by Matheus Bidu on the line. At 32, Luighi stole the ball in midfield from Matheuzinho and went alone to the area. He slowed down to shoot, and the full-back recovered to make a precise tackle to prevent the goal.

Palmeiras' goal: at 38 minutes, Rodrigo Garro lost the ball in midfield, and Palmeiras launched a counterattack. Mauricio carried from midfield to attack, shot, the ball deflected off Gabriel Paulista, and Hugo Souza parried it. On the rebound, Flaco López just tapped it in to open the score.

After the goal, Corinthians tried to press for an equalizer but couldn't create chances and left the field defeated 1-0.
