Corinthians remain the last South American club to win the Club World Cup

On the afternoon of Wednesday (17), Flamengo was defeated by PSG, from France, in a penalty shootout in the Intercontinental final, after a 1-1 draw in regular time. As a result, the team from Rio finished as runners-up in the tournament and, with that, Corinthians remains the last South American club to win the world title.

After beating Al-Ahly, from Egypt, 1-0 in the semifinal on 12/12/12, Corinthians faced Chelsea four days later in the Club World Cup final that year, at Yokohama Stadium in Japan, and defeated the English team 1-0. Both of the Alvinegro’s goals in the competition were scored by the Peruvian striker Paolo Guerrero.

On that day, coach Tite lined up the Alvinegro as follows: Cássio; Alessandro (captain), Chicão, Paulo André and Fábio Santos; Ralf and Paulinho; Jorge Henrique, Danilo and Emerson Sheik; Paolo Guerrero. It was the core of the Libertadores-winning team from six months earlier, with only two changes: Paulo André in place of Castán and Guerrero instead of Alex.

Since then, only European teams have won the tournament. During this period, five Brazilian teams have competed but failed to win the title: Atlético-MG (2013), Palmeiras (2020 and 2022), Fluminense (2023), Botafogo (2024), and Flamengo (2019, 2023, and 2025).

Thus, the Club World Cup winners from 2013 onwards are: Bayern Munich (2013 and 2020), Real Madrid (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022, and 2024), Liverpool (2019), Chelsea (2021 and 2025 – Club World Cup), Barcelona (2015), Manchester City (2023), and PSG (2025).

It’s worth remembering that in 2000, against Vasco at Maracanã, Corinthians won the first Club World Cup in its history. After a goalless draw in regular time, the Alvinegro overcame the team from Rio in a penalty shootout to become champions.
