Corinthians right-back celebrates milestone, eyes Grêmio duel

With goals from defender Gustavo Henrique and forward Memphis Depay, Corinthians overcame Grêmio with a score of 2-0 at the Neo Química Arena, in a match for the 31st round of the Brazilian Championship. The victory placed the Alvinegro in tenth position with 42 points (11 wins, nine draws, and 11 losses – 34 goals scored and 35 conceded).

Moments after the final whistle, right-back Matheuzinho gave an interview to the press in the mixed zone and spoke about a significant milestone he reached wearing the Corinthians shirt: 100 matches: “I’ll be very honest. I was just a kid who wanted to play football, and today, being here playing for Corinthians, reaching 100 games, man, it’s something I never imagined. I feel at home and I hope God grants me this opportunity,” he began.

The number 2 was signed by the Alvinegro at the start of 2024 after a successful stint in Flamengo’s youth and professional teams, becoming the undisputed starter for Corinthians in the middle of last year. He was important in the team’s surge in the last Brasileirão towards the preliminary phase of the Libertadores and in the 2025 Paulista title, against Palmeiras.

Next, he highlighted the affection and gratitude he has for Corinthians, mentioning football executive Fabinho Soldado, with whom he worked during his time at Flamengo. In 2023, the player spent six months sidelined after breaking his leg and recalled the support from the executive and his family members.

“I am very happy, especially fulfilled, that the Corinthians institution opened its doors to me when I was going through a tough time, and Fabinho. He also opened the doors, I thank him a lot, and all the players, since the day I arrived, they welcomed me very well.”

“I was going through a difficult moment. I broke my leg and was three months without playing, I couldn’t return in the same way I had played before. So the fans were patient, the club was patient with me too, and today I’m living the best moment of my life here. I am very happy to reach 100 games, alongside the fans, my family, my friends, so I just feel very fulfilled,” he continued.

In total, there are 44 wins, 27 draws, and 29 losses – a 52.5% success rate. In addition, he has five goals and seven assists. In 2025, he has three goals and four assists, most of them after the arrival of coach Dorival Júnior, who was hired at the end of April.

Later, he answered when his ‘turning point’ with the Corinthians shirt happened: “Man, I don’t think there was an exact moment. I had some very tough times here, I doubted my ability, with games well below what I expected. But I went through a roller coaster of emotions, and I had the resilience to stay calm. So, I had my adaptation period, and that’s how I grew, gaining the trust of my teammates.”

Finally, he joked about the good results with the third kit for the 2025/2026 season, as well as the All Black model at the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025: “Last year it worked out, I hope we can repeat it. It’s working.”

Matheuzinho also mentioned his efficiency in offensive duels with Belgian winger Amuzu: “I don’t remember losing to him, no. I was marking Marlon, so I don’t think I lost any balls to him. Then when the guy came on in the second half, I was playing a bit further back. So, against Amuzu, I don’t remember losing (any duels) to him,” he concluded.

Now, Matheuzinho and the Corinthians squad are preparing for their next commitment in the Brazilian Championship. Next Wednesday (5th), the Alvinegro will visit Red Bull Bragantino at 7:00 PM (Brasília time), at the Cícero de Souza Marques Stadium, for the 32nd round of the national competition.
