Corinthians share details of Liga Sul-Americana openers

Corinthians Basketball fans will have an extra reason to support the sport in October. Timão confirmed, through an official statement this Thursday, the 18th, that the Wlamir Marques Gymnasium, in Parque São Jorge, will host Group C of the South American Basketball League (LSB), with matches being played between the 24th and 26th of next month.

The LSB is the second largest continental tournament organized by FIBA Americas, only below the Basketball Champions League Americas (BCLA). Timão, which participated in the competition in 2019, finishing as runner-up after losing the final to Botafogo 2-1 in the playoffs, returns to the competition, facing in the group stage the teams Quimsa-ARG, Defensor Sporting-URU, and ABC Camp-EQU.

The Alvinegro announced that it will still provide details about ticket sales. The team's first match will be on Friday, October 24, at 8:10 PM (Brasília time), against ABC Camp-EQU. On the 25th, at 7:10 PM, the match will be against Defensor Sporting-URU. Finally, on the 26th, also at 7:10 PM, Timão will conclude its participation in Group C against Quimsa-ARG. The top two in the group will qualify for the next phase.

In total, the LSB will be contested by 16 clubs from eight countries. In Group A, Olimpia Kings-PAR, Jorge Guzmán-EQU, Oberá Tenis Club-ARG, and Bauru Basket are present. In Group B, Sucre-BOL, Ferro Carril-ARG, Vasco, and Motilones del Norte-COL are part of it. Finally, in Group D, the competition will be between Deportivo San José-PAR, Regatas Corrientes-ARG, Pinheiros, and Leones de Quilpué-CHI.

Corinthians seeks to revive its great continental tradition in basketball. The golden generation of the 1950s and 1960s won the South American Club Championship three times, in 1965, 1966, and 1969, earning the club two podiums in World Championships. In the 1990s, the team led by star Oscar Schmidt reached the final of the South American League twice but ended up as runners-up both times, in 1996 and 1997. The last final was the one mentioned in this article – another runner-up finish in the LSB in 2019.
