Leeds United supporters on Fuerteventura have built a lively matchday hub in Corralejo, packing out a small bar whenever Leeds play. It has become a lifeline for holidaymakers searching for pre-season friendlies that most bars do not screen on LUTV.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the Leeds United Supporters’ Club Fuerteventura branch meets at The York on Calle Juan de Austria. The group is run by John Holliday, a former Elland Road season ticket holder who moved to the island 15 years ago and set up the branch to bring fans together.
Leeds and Newcastle are among the best represented teams in the resort. Regulars number about 12 locals, joined by supporters from across the island and visiting holidaymakers. The York has around 25 seats, yet attendances often top 40, with a peak of 65 for Harrogate Town in the FA Cup last year.
A Tottenham matchday drew 64, including a group of 15 fantasy football friends meeting in person for the first time. When Leeds beat Manchester United, Holliday recalls an incredible atmosphere. On one occasion five fans in a row all had North East Upper season tickets at the same time.
Fuerteventura shares the UK time zone and both are five hours ahead of the US east coast, so Leeds’ American pre-season brings late nights. Wrexham in Tampa and Sunderland in New Jersey kick off at 12.30am UK time, while Liverpool in Chicago is 8pm on Saturday August 2.
The bar plans to show all friendlies, though US timings may limit numbers. Leeds are expected to host RB Leipzig on August 8/9 before meeting Manchester United in Dublin the following Wednesday. A flag hangs permanently inside and updates are via Facebook or by checking at the bar.
