Tommy Doyle has returned to Wolves training after a season on loan at Birmingham, and is being assessed as a potential option for next season. Rob Edwards has replaced Vitor Pereira and the club have been relegated.
According to ExpressAndStar.com, the 24-year-old’s deal included a £10million obligation to buy if Birmingham went up, but they finished 10th, so he will spend a few weeks back at Compton. He is not in Wolves’ registered squad, so will not feature in the Premier League this season.
After coming through at Manchester City, where he made seven senior appearances, his first loan was with Hamburg in 2021/22. He played seven times there, six in the German second tier, then moved to Cardiff and made 20 appearances, 19 in the Championship.
A standout 2022/23 followed at Sheffield United, who clinched automatic promotion with a 2-0 win over West Brom on 26 April 2023. Doyle hit a late FA Cup quarter-final winner against Blackburn, missed the semi-final against parent club City, and totalled 38 appearances, four goals and seven assists.
He then spent two full seasons with Wolves in the Premier League, making 58 appearances in all competitions, 50 in the top flight, with 14 starts, 11 in his first season. Last term at Birmingham he featured 42 times, 38 in the Championship, registered four assists, was sent off against Sheffield United in December, and started exactly half of his league games. His second-tier experience could help next season.
