Coventry City showed their clinical edge on Tuesday evening when they came from behind to defeat Sheffield United 3-1.

The Blades took the lead in the first half when Ben Mee flicked on a corner at the near post where Sam McCallum steered the ball home from close range. Michael Cooper was forced off at the break and within minutes of the second-half substitute keeper Adam Davies was picking the ball out of the net as Tatsuhiro Sakamoto fired the Sky Blues level.

Ten minutes later, Bobby Thomas headed a corner into an empty net as Davies flapped at the cross. With the Blades chasing an equaliser, Coventry killed the game off when Haji Wright raced in behind and played the ball across to his strike partner Brandon Thomas-Asante for an opening net.

First-half

United began brightly, immediately putting the hosts under pressure. A long throw from Sam McCallum caused problems in the Coventry box, setting the tone for an energetic opening. At the other end, Josh Eccles forced a smart save from Michael Cooper, who reacted sharply to turn the effort away.

The Blades’ early aggression, however, came at a cost when McCallum was booked for dissent after committing a foul on 11 minutes. From the resulting free-kick, Eccles tested Cooper again, the United goalkeeper parrying the strike before Japhet Tanganga cleared behind for a corner.

Moments later, Sydie Peck linked neatly with Tyrese Campbell, who spun well in the box before firing low, though Carl Rushworth gathered comfortably.

United’s persistence paid off midway through the half. From a Sydie Peck corner, Ben Mee flicked the ball on, and former Coventry man Sam McCallum pounced from close range to give the visitors the lead.

Both sides continued to create openings in an entertaining first period. For Coventry, Milan van Ewijk’s long throw was flicked on by Liam Kitching, only for Haji Wright to narrowly miss at full stretch. United remained dangerous, with Peck threading a brilliant ball into the right channel for Tom Cannon, whose cutback found Peck again, but the midfielder’s shot was blocked and smothered by Rushworth.

As half-time approached, Brandon Thomas-Asante’s cross found Wright in the area, but Cooper again came to United’s rescue with a fine save.

Unfortunately for the Blades, Cooper was unable to continue after picking up a knock and was replaced by Adam Davies at the break. The substitute’s first action ended in disaster, as United failed to clear a long throw and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto swept home a low finish from the edge of the box to bring the hosts level.

Just minutes later, Frank Lampard’s men were in front. Davies misjudged a punch from Victor Torp’s corner, allowing Bobby Thomas’ header to creep over the line and turn the game on its head.

United pushed for an equaliser, with substitute Femi Seriki injecting energy down the right. After good work from fellow sub Andre Brooks, Seriki’s low cross found Peck, but his effort was deflected narrowly wide.

Inside the final ten minutes, United pressed forward in search of a point but were undone on the counter. Haji Wright broke the offside trap and unselfishly squared for Brandon Thomas-Asante to tap home the clincher with the last meaningful kick of the game.

The defeat leaves Sheffield United third from bottom, with 11 losses from their opening 14 matches, which is already more than they suffered throughout the entirety of the 2024/25 season.
