FLW looks at how Doug King ranks amongst Premier League owners in terms of net worth
Coventry City have their eyes on a promotion back to the Premier League for the first time since the 2000/01 campaign this season.
It's been a rollercoaster of a journey over the past two and a half decades, but the Sky Blues finally look primed and ready to make that jump, after an unbeaten start to the current Championship campaign, with 27 goals in nine games.
In the last two and a half years, Coventry has come on leaps and bounds since Doug King took 100% control of the club after his purchase from Sisu Capital, who had been in charge since 2007.
Since then, Coventry have made Wembley trips in both the Championship play-off final and the FA Cup semi-final, and were mere seconds away from taking their play-off semi-final against Sunderland to penalties last season.
Nothing seems to be being left to chance this season, however, and it may not be long before Doug King is the owner of a Premier League club, but how does his wealth compare against England's elite?
When Doug King took over Coventry in January 2023, it was reported that the CEO of Yelo Enterprises and RCMA Capital LLP had a net worth of over $400 million, or £301,398,000.
When pitting that against current Premier League owners, according to a list published by Football League World's sister website, GiveMeSport, a net worth of just over £300 million places King third-bottom, above Brentford's Matthew Benham and Burnley's Alan Pace.
Brighton and Hove Albion are the current third-bottom-placed side in the list, and Tony Bloom's net worth comes to a staggering £1.3 billion, showing how much sheer wealth these top-flight owners have.
When comparing things to the top of the food chain, King's multi-millionaire status is a mere golffish in a tank full of sharks. Eight ownership groups have a net worth of over £10 billion, whilst Newcastle United top the pile, as their Saudi Public Investment Fund and other partners total £489 billion.
Doug King has shown that he's willing to use his wealth to help Coventry improve both on and off the pitch, but he'll face a tough task to keep up with his new opponents if the Sky Blues were to secure promotion this season.
It's worth noting that the estimated net worth of Doug King was calculated when he took over Coventry, and a lot has changed in a couple of years.
Most notably, King finally secured the purchase of the CBS Arena, meaning the Sky Blues no longer have to rent out the stadium and share it with other sports teams. Owning the stadium will help generate a massive amount of revenue, which the club can keep.
Additionally, promotion to the Premier League can earn Championship sides a lot more money to spend in the following summer as they strive to remain in the top flight. Doug King has seen the fanfare around Coventry in the short amount of time he's been the owner, and he'll want to ensure that the Sky Blues stay there.
And finally, being among the lower end of the wealth list doesn't always translate to on-field success. Underdog stories are still rife in football, and sometimes the sheer support of a club can trump another club that has hundreds of millions to spend.
Therefore, Doug King may be among the lower end of the wealth spectrum among Premier League owners, but he'll be doing all he can to keep his Coventry side in the top flight for as long as possible if Championship promotion comes this season.
