Coventry City should already have one eye on the situation involving Tottenham Hotspur

Coventry City face the prospect of remarkably swapping divisions with Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

The Sky Blues are in a strong position to gain promotion to the Premier League this season, with Frank Lampard’s side sitting top of the Championship table.

Meanwhile, a 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace on Thursday night has further plunged Spurs into a relegation battle.

The London outfit have lost their last five league games in a row, and are now just one point clear of the bottom three with nine games still to play.

Coventry have not competed in the top flight since 2001, and have narrowly missed out on promotion in two of the last three campaigns, twice losing in the play-offs.

But the club are now confident of finally making that final step, with the team currently eight points clear of third place Ipswich Town, albeit the Tractor Boys do have a game in hand.

Coventry City could eye James Maddison return

If Coventry do manage to swap divisions with Tottenham Hotspur in the summer, then that could open the door for a surprising return to the club for James Maddison.

The playmaker joined the Premier League side in a deal worth a reported £40 million following Leicester City’s relegation to the Championship.

But he came through the ranks of the Coventry academy system, breaking into the first team squad before he made it big in the top flight.

The 29-year-old departed in 2016, signing for Norwich City, but Spurs’ possible relegation could yet open the door for a sensational move back to the CBS Arena.

While there’s still plenty of football to be played this season, even if we are quickly approaching the business end, Coventry will surely have one eye on what’s happening at the bottom of the Premier League table.

If Spurs go down, then Maddison will absolutely want to remain in the top flight, and a return to the CBS Arena could be a perfect move for him to accomplish that.

There's no doubt that he will have plenty of other top flight suitors, but the pull of coming back to where it all began could be enough to convince him to make that switch.

The playmaker has been injured throughout this campaign, but when he is at his best he is one of Spurs’ best players and he has been sorely missed all year.

James Maddison reunion would be a perfect move for Coventry this summer

Maddison should be back in action by the time the summer rolls around, and he is someone that could be a great addition to Lampard’s side, if promoted.

He is an FA Cup winner and he’s contributed 56 goals and 48 assists from his seven seasons of top flight football in his career.

Coventry will need players of his calibre in order to make the step up to the Premier League, and he is somebody that could combine well with the likes of Haji Wright and perhaps even Jack Rudoni.

Maddison’s signing would also be a strong statement of intent for the Sky Blues that they intend to establish themselves at that level long-term.

Sunderland showed last summer that investing in the squad is key to survival in the division, with Régis Le Bris’ side now set to avoid the drop straight back down to the Championship.

So Coventry should be preparing for a busy summer, particularly after they kept a relatively settled squad after their play-off loss to the Black Cats in 2025.

Taking advantage of Spurs’ situation would be a smart way to get started on their transfer business in the summer, if they do go down.

It would be a dream signing for supporters, and would provide an extra lift to the fans in what will be an exciting period as they dream of what could be in the Premier League.
