The Sky Blues have been linked with an audacious move for Ben Chilwell

Coventry City have been one of the Championship's standout sides thus far, especially after netting 12 goals in the space of a week against Derby County and Queens Park Rangers.

In what is Frank Lampard's first full season in charge at the CBS Arena, the Sky Blues are hoping to continue the large wave of momentum that took them to the play-offs at the end of last campaign, although the former Chelsea boss will hope to go one better this time around.

It has been an intriguing transfer window in this part of the West Midlands too, with Lampard not seeing that many faces come through the door, although deals for Kaine Kesler-Hayden, Carl Rushworth and Miguel Angel Brau showcase further shrewd additions to what is already a high-quality second-tier outfit.

There is just a week of the summer transfer window to go, and after, arguably, one of the biggest deals in the club's recent history, with the purchase of the CBS ensuring stability after many years, City are reportedly looking to make yet another statement after their 7-1 demolition of the West London side on Saturday afternoon.

Frank Lampard interested in Coventry City, Chelsea FC agreement for £100k-per-week Ben Chilwell

Ben Chilwell has fallen out-of-favour in recent times at Chelsea, with the experienced full-back's last Premier League appearance for the Blues coming in a 1-0 success against Everton in May 2024.

The £45m buy from Leicester City has struggled to remain consistently available in recent seasons amid fitness issues, and with Jorrel Hato moving to West London for £37m from Ajax as back-up to Marc Cucurella, it's hard to see any way back for the 21-time international at Stamford Bridge.

It had been reported by insider, Simon Phillips, that the club were weighing up the possibility of terminating his contract, which runs until 2027 after a loan stint with FA Cup holders Crystal Palace.

And, in a potential raid which would likely send shockwaves through the Championship, Phillips has now claimed that Lampard is looking to reunite with his former colleague at Coventry, although it remains to be seen whether it would be on a loan or permanent basis with such little time in the window left.

Chilwell would add bundles of quality from both a defensive and attacking standpoint, often resolute against opposition wingers whilst managing to also accumulate 33 goals and assists from full-back in just 177 Premier League appearances.

Under normal circumstances, many would welcome a move for the man who, according to Capology, is ESTIMATED to be earning £100,000 per week in West London. However, it would definitely provide a dilemma for Lampard and those currently on the books who feature in the same position.

Frank Lampard facing Jay Dasilva, Jake Bidwell & Miguel Angel Brau dilemma if Ben Chilwell joins Coventry City

The left side of defence is currently one area which City fans have next-to-no worries with, with Brau's move from Granada earlier this summer providing even more depth on top of the vastly-experienced Jay Dasilva and Jake Bidwell, who also offer Lampard differing attributes.

Bidwell and Brau both played the full 90 minutes of the Sky Blues' EFL Cup success against Luton Town, although the former was moved to a centre-back role for this occasion, with the newly-recruited Spaniard filling in for Dasilva who was rested amid starting and, once again, being his usual, consistent self in all three league games so far.

When asked about the club's transfer plans leading up to the deadline at 7PM next Monday, Lampard said: "...I understand where the squad can maybe have some more depth, but those things are obviously all moving parts at the minute."

Undeniably, the 47-year-old cannot be reliant on the same players each week, such is the unrelenting nature of Championship football, but with Brau under contract until 2029, whilst Dasilva and Bidwell both have two years remaining, if Chilwell was to move, one of the latter two names could be left to severely consider their long-term future if they were to fall down the pecking order.

The Milton Keynes-born man has also featured in the left-midfield role, but supporters would once again be left somewhat confused if that was how the 28-year-old could be utilised, with Lampard also fairly well-stacked in advanced areas through Ephron Mason-Clark, Raphael Borges Rodrigues and even the versatile Brandon Thomas-Asante.

It would be a statement signing, no doubt, and one which would reaffirm plenty of predictions that City could finally end their lengthy Premier League exile. However, scratch below the initial surface, and it feels rather unnecessary.
