Hernan Crespo has said he is proud of the development of Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

Crespo coached his compatriot at Argentine side Defensa y Justicia and has watched Fernandez’s progress closely, a career path that has included World Cup success with the national team in 2022 and a high-profile transfer to Crespo’s former club, Chelsea.

The 25-year-old scored 15 goals in all competitions in 2025/26 and Crespo has backed Fernandez to play a big part at this summer’s World Cup.

He said the midfielder has been a ‘leader’ from an early age and called on Fernandez to ‘step up’ as Argentina look to defend their world title.

“Players like Enzo Fernandez, Alexis Mac Allister and Emi Martinez all need to step up. Fernandez was the leader of my Defensa y Justicia team, even though he was young,” Crespo told the BBC.

“Now he is world famous. I tried to help him become a great player. I am proud, but I only helped him a little, because everything he has achieved is because of him.

“Argentina have learned how to play with or without Messi. I think they are among the favourites, along with Spain and France. Maybe England can do it, or Brazil – but the other three are my favourites.”
