Cristian Romero (27) has insisted he never considered leaving Tottenham this summer, despite speculation linking the club captain with a move to Atletico Madrid, as reported by Sky Sports.

The 27-year-old Argentina international, who signed a new long-term contract last month, was forced to address rumours after comments earlier in the year suggested he would one day like to play in La Liga. Yet Romero was unequivocal in reaffirming his commitment.

Sometimes in football things come out on social media and in the press, but I never said I wanted to leave,” he explained. “The most important thing is not what people say, but what the manager and the president say. I’m very happy here, for me, it’s one big family.

Romero reserved special praise for new head coach Thomas Frank, whose arrival he credits with reinforcing his belief in the club’s direction. “From the first day I arrived, people here gave everything to me. Since Thomas came, I’ve been really happy. I like the way we’re working and training together. Of course, things can always improve, but the right decisions are being made to take us forward.

Romero addresses past criticism

Romero has not always been so positive. Following Ange Postecoglou’s dismissal in June, he posted a cryptic message praising the Australian’s achievements “despite the many obstacles that always existed and always will exist.

Reflecting on that statement three months on, the defender admitted his words may have been misinterpreted. “I never wanted to seem like I was speaking badly about people within the club,” he said. “Sometimes I commit errors when I speak, but I always want the best for Tottenham. Things have been attributed to me that I didn’t say.”Now, though, Romero sees progress. “There were one or two issues in the past, but now I see a club with great organisation, clear ideas, and a manager who is sorting everything out. We’re all pulling in the same direction.”
