Former Corinthians midfielder Cristian, who helped the club return to Serie A, has urged compromise over any renewal for Memphis Depay, saying the team’s interests must come first.
"It is very difficult, only those within the process can judge whether a renewal makes sense or not. I think both sides need to reach an understanding, whatever is good for Corinthians and good for him," he told Craquito TV.
"Of course money is involved, both sides have to give ground, because Corinthians are bigger than all that. It is important they find agreement. If it does not happen, Corinthians go on, life goes on."
Memphis remains under contract until 31 July 2026. Since arriving in 2024 he has played 79 games, scoring 20 goals with 15 assists, and won the 2025 Paulistão, the 2025 Copa do Brasil and the 2026 Supercopa Rei.
His most recent appearance for Corinthians was the 2-0 Libertadores defeat to Argentina’s Platense on 27 May. After that match he travelled to the Netherlands to join his national team for the 2026 World Cup.
Before his deal expires, Corinthians have three Brasileirão fixtures, against Remo on 23, Bahia on 26 and Athletico Paranaense one day before the contract ends. The club still owe around R$ 40 million to the Dutchman in bonuses for targets met.
